Success for the Chianti Classico Collection 2018

The presentation of the new Chianti Classico vintages to the top experts in the sector, a unique opportunity to get to know the denomination, its labels and the latest news from one of the territories, has been concluded in the last days at the Stazione Leopolda in Florence.
The numbers are increasingly important: 186 companies for 659 labels in tasting. A total of over 9000 bottles have been opened and served by a team of 50 sommeliers in the two-day event, attended by over 250 journalists from 30 different countries in the world and more than 1800 operators, Italians and foreigners. 59 the barrel previews of the 2017 vintage and 92 labels of Chianti Classico Gran Selezione.
"We arrive this year in Florence after a difficult season - said Sergio Zingarelli, President of the Chianti Classico Wine Consortium - but we managed it with the best weapons on which the today's modern winemaker can count: deep knowledge of their territory and the ability to know how to wait for the right moment. Thus, while on the one hand we had to record a significant decrease in production in 2017. As always, the Collection shows to be critically examined our work in recent years, not just the harvest just passed. Our "year of wine" begins with the Collection and I feel obliged to take this opportunity to continue to emphasize the importance of our territory in its many aspects, ranging from scenic beauty to the wine making vocation, to its human and social aspects. This year's edition, the twenty-fifth, speaks of a great strengthening of the name: in addition to the economic numbers, participation by both members and the press and sector operators marks an historical record".
At the Leopolda it was also possible to taste the oils of 23 producers of DOP Chianti Classico.

This year the event's partners were also important names of food and wine industry linked to this, as some of the best Italian PDO products that, under the institutional hat of AICIG (the Italian Association of Geographical Indication Consortia), were presented to the public of the Collection through meetings and tastings by: Consortium for the Protection of Parmigiano-Reggiano PDO, Consortium of Tuscan Ham PDO, Consortium for the Protection of Finocchiona PGI, Consortium of Olive Oils Protection La Bella della Daunia PDO, Consortium for the Protection of the Mozzarella Cheese of Bufala Campana PDO, Consortium for the Protection of Pecorino Toscano DOP, Consortium for the Protection of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI, Consortium  for the Protection of Grana Padano DOP.

The tasting of the proposed wines did not disappoint even this year. Among the 2016 years, Antico Borgo di Sugame, which has hints of mint and traces of wood, Carpineto, which is sapid and well-structured, Casale dello Sparviero, which denotes the taste of red fruits and violets, Castello di Ama, with floral and cherry features, Castello Vicchiomaggio San Jacopo, which is sapid and persistent on  the palate, Collazzi - Bastioni, spicy and with strong tannin, Guidi 1929 San Giorgio allo Spadaio which offers floral and citrus notes.  stand out. The 2015 vintage was good for Borgo La Stella, Castello di Verrazzano, Fattoria Montecchio, Ormanni. As for the 2015 reserves, it is worth mentioning Antico Borgo di Sugame, Felsina and La Sala.

Despite the drought of 2017 there was a record in sales with three 37 million bottles sold in 140 countries worldwide, said the President of the Consortium Sergio Zingarelli and the new Director Carlotta Gori. The USA is confirmed as the first market for naming, which absorbs 33% of total sales, up 1% compared to 2016. Growth was also recorded in the domestic market, where 23% of bottles are sold. In third place we find Germany, followed by Canada, Scandinavian countries, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Japan.

Sergio Zingarelli said he was very satisfied with the positive trend in the US and Canada. The production of Chianti Classico 2017 due to drought was around 207,000 hectoliters with a 37% drop compared to the previous year, the lowest quantity for 40 years. However the quality has always remained very high. It should be remembered that the production district of the Chianti Classico has a global turnover of over 700 million euro.
